TRAINING NEW VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY PROMOTERS

Over the course of two consecutive weekends, August 29-30 and September 5-6, Dr. Wolf, Cherlie and our community development staff and promoters conducted a training session for 16 new Community Promoters. This included 12 people from 6 new communities and 4 from communities where previous promoters have resigned or moved out of the area. The training represented expansion of our Water and Sanitation Program to 6 new communities and continuing education for those promoters in the 12 communities where we already work. We were assisted in developing the curriculum for the training by a grad student from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Temitayo Adebiyi and FHH board member and JHSON faculty member Dr. Diana Baptiste. The trainees included 13 men and 3 women and they were a very enthusiastic group!

The training included some didactic sessions, activities with illustrations and lots of role-playing. It covered WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) principles including the germ theory of disease, how water is contaminated, importance of hand-washing, construction and use of a tippy-tap, importance of water treatment and storage and use of latrines and improved sanitation methods. New topics presented during the training included understanding and influencing behavior change and practicing core leadership principles.

Our clinic staff cooked a hot meal for the training participants each day and on the last day of training, they all received a Certificate of Participation, hygiene booklet with teaching posters, backpack, notebook and pens, polo shirts and caps with the clinic logo and a rain poncho. They are now back in their communities doing WASH education and will be supervised from time to time by our community development staff. We give thanks for all of the donors who have contributed to this important Water and Sanitation Program!
