17 communities were identified as areas that were feasible for planting beans
A meeting was held at the clinic on July 11, 2009 with 2 representatives from each of these 17 communities, and the goals and procedure for seed distribution was discussed
16 out of 17 communities organized a Management Committee for management of the project and presented a list of committee members and their responsibilities
These communities were each given money for purchase and distribution of the seeds to community members the committee chooses
One community’s leaders did not feel that they could adequately fulfill the requirements of the donation and declined to accept the funds. These funds were added to the Patient Poor Fund
Pending
The communities will present a list of seed recipients after distribution is completed
These recipients will be responsible for giving back 2X the amount of seeds at the time of harvest
The harvested seeds will be re-distributed within the community according to the decision of the Management Committee
This process will be repeated with each harvest
Spot checks by clinic personnel will be done periodically to evaluate effectiveness of the program and progress
2. Home construction
Construction of the home for Madam Antime and her family is essentially completed
It consists of 4 rooms with a central living room, small porch, two entry doors and eight windows
Wood is in the process of being cut to frame the roof, after which the tin roof will be installed. Doors and windows are in the process of being made and will be installed after the roof is on
3. Road repairs
Three of the most washed-out areas of the Gatineau road were repaired as outlined by the consulting engineer
Local workmen and masons were hired by the engineer, who provided on-site supervision
The work was felt to be well done and budget was adhered to as projected
Response to the repairs from local leaders and individuals has been very positive
The repairs have significantly improved our trip up and down to the clinic site, especially in rainy weather
4. Clinic poor fund
This is an ongoing fund, designed to help the most indigent patients and their families receive care at the clinic and the government hospital in Jérémie
