CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT  ~ For the most recent updates visit our Blog

Our vision for Sant de Sante de Gatineau (Health Center of Gatineau) is to develop a primary care clinic and maternity
center on our present clinic site.  The project will involve construction of the following buildings:

Phase I:  a permanent outpatient clinic building with laboratory, radiology and pharmacy wing and a small
                   house for long-term staff

Phase II:  a maternity center, where regular deliveries can be performed as well as emergency obstetric
                   services, including C-sections

Prior to construction of these buildings it is necessary to build an entry road, leading from the main road onto the clinic
building site.  A small creek runs through the site and a bridge needs to be built over the creek, stable enough to support
the weight of large dump trucks and construction vehicles.

Here are some photos of the creek running through the property and the site of the future clinic building:

As we have spent time working in our little “house clinic” on the Gatineau site, we’ve gotten a better sense of what services
and programs we will need to offer to improve the health and well-being of people in the communities around us.  This has
then determined what rooms and equipment need to be included in the clinic building itself.  In order to finalize our plans
and develop detailed construction drawings, we enlisted the help of Engineering Ministries International (EMI) in July 2010.
In November 2010 EMI sent a surveyor, Grant Dorman, to Haiti to survey the property for us.  Here are photos of Grant and
Engineer John Ohlinger doing the survey work:

Following the survey, we began working via internet with EMI and volunteer architects to finalize the clinic floor plan.  Then,
in March 2011 EMI sent down a team of architects and engineers to Jérémie to finalize the construction plans and site
layout for all of our future buildings.

They evaluated local water sources:          Did percolation tests of the land:

Walked the property looking for the best site for the clinic, staff housing and maternity center buildings:

Evaluated other Haiti construction projects and assessed the local electrical systems and our future electrical needs:

Put all the information into their specialized computer programs:

And, at the end of the week, gave us this artist rendition of our future outpatient clinic building, set onto a photo of the
actual site (click to enlarge):

Just after the EMI visit, we met with Engineer Paul Chery, the Regional Director of the Haitian Department of Transportation,
and he agreed to take responsibility for construction of the entry road and bridge over the creek.  He and his workmen
brought a new backhoe/front-loader up to the site on April 2nd and began clearing the land for the road and bridge.

Here are photos from that first day of construction

Join us in praise that our construction project is underway!  We’re excited about the potential we will have with a new clinic
building to expand our medical care and services to the people in the communities around Gatineau.
